Abstract:
The School of Educati睡資on at the University o行門f New South Wales, in partnership西讀 with Educational Assessm這遠ent Australia, has developed an in民樂novative e-based set of assessment too紅媽ls and advice to assist teachers in d區上eveloping pedagogically sou廠男nd and useful approaches 又木to assessing the English 喝姐language development of 吃子ESL students across all year業土s in Victorian schools. This workshop大友 will outline the aims and rat裡街ionale for this project and its theor關要etical underpinnings視開 in assessment for learning, a concept 火門first used in the UK in t說銀he late 1980s, and widely話師 promoted through the work of 動站the Assessment Refor件腦m Group (Assessment Ref資音orm Group, 1999, 2001他生; Black & Wiliam, 1998照放), and its Vygotskian notion師動s of dynamic and scaffolded studen嗎些t and teacher learning. Pa問好rticipants will then work through a r書著ange of activities des兵科igned to help develop teacher assessm要頻ent literacy as well as enhance the tr是著ustworthiness of the南大ir assessments. The var件和ious challenges invo筆紙lved in supporting teache舊劇r-assessors with variable levels o短場f language knowledge and 妹雪skills and assessment l校藍iteracy will also be explo也睡red.

Abstract:
Competency with spoken language和快 is a crucial prerequisite for ef秒服fective communication and for academi說務c achievement (Goh & Burns, 2012, 城朋Thornbury, 2012). How水筆ever, speaking is conside很的red the most challenging o科妹f the four skills in learning an作劇d teaching a second or foreign languag都綠e. Students learning a f匠間oreign language will have varyi算技ng levels of oral language pro市飛ficiency that will impact關風 upon the degree to which the放討y are able to communicate eff明那ectively and participate in learn老討ing. Providing opportunities for 白坐constructive classroom ta一雨lk and the development of effective 兵黑oral communication skills will support 好見foreign language students視匠’ cognitive development and lan視開guage learning as well as reading c美兵omprehension and writin子草g skills. This presen短服tation draws on the rese也明archer’s recent work w問問ith schools and educatio地技nal systems in Singapore, Hong Ko鐵行ng, Brunei and Australia to sho紅商w how oral language s跳子kills development can 習你be integrated into learning and 大厭teaching using the key principles of 錯長assessment for learning, i拿草ncluding feedback an校體d self and peer assessment老房, and web-based assessme讀那nt resources including annot作能ated audio and video-records and digita刀長l portfolios.

Professor Chris Davison, a special城唱ist in language education and sc數了hool-based assessment, h視玩as been Professor of Educa謝大tion and Head of the School湖看 of Education, UNSW, 低通since September 2008. 理東She was previously Associate 妹化Dean (Research) in the F暗匠aculty of Education 遠熱at University of Hong Kong, where 為光she remains an Honorary Prof物有essor. Chris has publishe計兵d extensively on Eng樂低lish language and literacy deve煙物lopment, language and 遠文content curriculum, and l筆離anguage assessment, including in Langu見坐age Testing and Language土人 Assessment Quarterly. S森術he is a series editor for Springer’s n習為ew series on English language educati快從on, Editor in Chief of廠男 the Australian Review of Appl讀笑ied Linguistics, and also 音報editor and contributor to a two volume 的生handbook on teaching English 用但internationally (with Jim Cu河銀mmins).
